March 2011 Newsletter

The News is, of course, dominated by news of the terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan in the first week of March, but here, for us, the news is dominated by the loss of Shirley DenBroeder.  Shirley Jean denBroeder, 75, of Reynoldsburg, passed away on March 3, 2011.

She was born January 11, 1936 in Newark to the late Murrell and Ruth Orr.
She is survived by her son, Jody denBroeder; her brother Paul Orr; her sisters, Nancy Channell, Caroline King, Elizabeth Williams, and Marjorie Bergstrom.  She is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, David Bline, John and Lee Orr.

Shirly graduated from Newark High School. She was a volunteer with the Columbus Metro Parks.  Donations are requested to Columbus Metro Parks, 1069 West Main Street, Westerville, OH 43081 in her memory.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held later.

In other news, the church (almost) monthly potluck is to be held Saturday March 19.  It will be a St Patrick’s day theme, and all who have any kind of music making equipment or a voice should come.  We have decided to see if we can actually sing… and St Patrick’s day is the excuse to find out.  If it doesn’t turn out well, maybe some merciful person will bring a movie to pop into the DVD machine.

The monthly (really, we do this every month… much more reliably than we do the potluck) congregation board meeting was held Mar 13.  Old business:  we decided not to have the $200 energy audit but we decided to spring for the $25 energy assessment by AEP.  Stay tuned for ideas.  On the subject of rental of the facility, we charge $50 for half a day of use.  However, we don’t charge the members to use the grounds.  So it turns out we don’t collect much because most of the people interested in the place are our members.  So we are all encouraged to make use of the facility whenever it makes sense for you.

New Business:  Marko is doing well in his new home in California.  He is going to be a Father in July.  Marko generously paid for 3 years of our website fees, so THANKs MARKO!

We need more people to step up and help with the building.  Some more people need to come early and help set up or stay and clean up.  We are a small group folks, we can all help a little more so we don’t require the same generous people do these chores week after week.

John Martin is going to be ordained as a minister for the UUCE congregation.  We talked about the task of putting on the ceremony, which, for obvious reasons, we don’t often do.  Jan found a little guide book online for these kinds of ceremonies, but she thought it a tad sanctimonious.  Folks, sanctimony is not our strong suit at UUCE.  We need help with this.

And, FINALLY, we are going to have an “Open Forum” Sunday in April.  We debated whether the “Open Forum” should be open, or whether the “Open Forum” should be targeted at a topic.  We decided that we should use the day to address Earth Day and related environmental subjects.  Nevertheless, “Targeted Topic Forum” just doesn’t have the zesty feel of inclusiveness that “Open Forum” has.  SO we are going to call it “Open Forum” anyway.

Now aren’t you sad that you did not attend the congregation’s board meeting?

Peace, Rick

The monthly board meeting.  Everyone is invited… few actually attend.  There is a reason.

Gordon gaveled the meeting to order without a gavel or a pocket knife (which is how Stan does it.)  It was moved and seconded that we recess for Standing Women at 1PM.  It evenually emerged that May’s meeting was supposed to have been the bi-annual congregational meeting even though the special meetings are supposed to be semiannual.  As of November 14, 1999 the offices of President, President Elect, Secretary, member at large, and Treasurer are at stake in the semi-biannual congregational meeting.  However the meeting must be announced two weeks in advace of its being held, so the earliest that it can be held is 2 weeks.

The end of the year means pledge time.  Jim proffered a suggested note asking for donations, but there were several objections resulting in withdrawing the document.   Marcos and Jan will create a better document and return with it next month.  The UU head office requires a donation of some number of dollars a month and the expenses of running the building run some number of dollars a month and we need people to give their coin in order to pay the expenses.   The document is all about explaining that to the members.

The new Kroger program requires the non-proffit organization to produce a form 501(c) 3 form which we have not got.  The application fee cost $400.  The IRS will send a note that explains why the designation is not reqired for tax purposes.  Hope it works, don’t hold your breath over it.

The Board of the Church met Sunday Mar 14.  The minutes that were lost last month have been found.  But the minutes of last month (in which we reported that we had misplaced the previous month’s minutes) are now missing.  Stay tuned.

We had to spend substantial sums to have the snow removed from our parking lot twice this winter.  In addition, the Electric bill have been extremely high this winter.   We are still trying to arrange it to allow for people to have their Kroger Plus Card benefits to be donated to the church.

We purchased 10 Hymnals recently.  Betty has inscribed them beautifully as per the instructions of the hymnal’s sponsor.  14 hymnals have been dedicated in total.

Sue gave us the summary of the results from her survey.

Someone mentioned the importance of the “Church of the Larger Fellowship”  to some of our isolated members.  Check it out for yourself at http://clf.uua.org/.

February Board Meeting

Stan made quick work of the board meeting this month.  The minutes from last month were tabled because they had been left on a table that wasn’t the table where the board meeting was being held.  The Treasurer’s report was discussed pretty much the same way all the Treasurer’s reports are always discussed. The annual insurance policy was paid, so there was a big hole in the budget when looked at from the point of view of one unlucky month when that bill gets paid.

The Space Cadets have really cleaned up the sanctuary to make more… um… space.  The Statue of Liberty was bubble-wrapped and stored… ok, she was put out on the back porch but there is a foot of snow on the ground right now.  The easy chair was easily taken by Material Subsistence Providers who apparently take furniture and keep it until someone needs it.  I couldn’t find a link on the internet to this outfit so you have to take the Space Cadet’s word for it.

A group called Sustainable Reynoldsburg has contacted us to inquire whether we would be interested in participating in their community garden project.  We told them our garden project had guardn’ problems because the rabbits and raccoons feasted until the deer came to muscle them aside.  Anyone interested in participating in Sustainable Reynoldsburg can find out more at:   http://groups.google.com/group/sustainable-reynoldsburg?lnk=srq

The Potluck is canceled for February 2010.  We are all looking forward to March.  More snow tomorrow– President’s day.  Stay healthy.
