Rick K spoke to us today about Veganism.
I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men. - Merijkowsky, Romance of Leonardo da Vinci
We started off with some words from our own members on veganism. Lauren said she read "Food Inc" about how the food industry treats its animals and decided not to participate any longer. Learning about the egg industry lead her to compassion. She is now a practicing vegan.
Peter spoke about growing up on a farm around farm animals and he has been a vegetarian for 9 years. He is empathetic and doesn't want to cause any pain. He is raising quail from eggs and it sometimes presents a moral dilemma. A very aggressive quail will turn on its mates. If you leave it alone it will kill the others. If you let it go in the wild it quickly is eaten by another animal. If you butcher it yourself it dies quickly without pain, but then what do you do to dispose of the body?
Rick affirmed that these are common reasons for becoming a vegetarian or vegan. It is also good for the environment. The raising of meat, particularly beef is harmful to the environment. Finally, vegetarianism/veganism is good for your health. There are many studies that conclude that vegetarians are healthier than those who eat meat.
There is also a movement within the UU community to change our first principle from recognizing the worth of every person to the worth of every being. The idea is to spread our compassion to more people; to more tribes; to more countries; to more primates; to more mammals; to more non-mammals; to more sentient beings; and so on...
