Shawn explained Samhain to us.  It is an important Celtic feast.  It is the beginning and the end of the year's cycle and a time when the gates between the worlds stand open.

In the agricultural year, Samain is the season during which herds were culled.  A few were kept for breeding stock while many were butchered for food during the winter.  Thus, the season beteen Samhain and midwinter was a tme of feasting and plenty.

All these strands combine in the modern Celtic neo-pagen holy day.  It is celebrated as Harvest Home, when the year's labor is ended and we enjoy the fruits of our effort.  It is the feast of the dead, when our ancestors and those who have passed in the year.  When the leaves die back the barrier between the living and the dead is at its weakest.  Magic and spirit contact is especially strong.  The old year passes away and the new year begins in darkness.
