Owen spoke to us today about Maps.  A map is a message from the mapmaker to the map reader.  A map has a message.  Some things are always left out, otherwise it would not be the map, it would be the underlying territory.  The map is not the territory.  It is symbolic speech. It is a symbol to lead us to think about the territory.

A cartographer is often a social reformer.  Our duty is to recognize the importance of understanding what it is that this social reformer is leaving out of the story just as much as understanding what is in the story. 

Isnt that what we should do when we hear social reformers?  Or politicians...
