Today we heard an address by Rev Frederick-Grey about standing up for the loving position when there are disputes. The symbol of the UU church is the chalice. It combines both the image of the cup and the flame. The flame reminds us of our struggle for justice in the world. It is easy to hold the flame up, but, when the flame is held high, it is harder to create a place where everyone feels welcome. The cup reminds us to maintain a warm sense of home.
Essentially, we are a community based in love. Love opens the doors. Love fights for others. Love puts us at risk as we bring safety to others. The community gives us a home. We need both the flame, and the cup.
